Tapered Rollers in Powered Roller Curves

Rollers used in curved conveyor beds are nearly always tapered. The correct taper for these two radii will cause most if not all conveyables to track a true path through the curve and will generally maintain the entry orientation of the conveyable from the charge end to the discharge end of the curve. The wrong taper on any of the rollers causes package skewing which must be corrected later to avoid jamming downstream in the conveyor system. The rollers must be spaced close enough to prevent hang-up of small packages, particularly on the outside of the curve. Most tapered rollers have a formed or machined shell, usually steel. Alternate methods of achieving a tapered roller include adding tapered (usually machined) lagging or successively larger rings applied to a straight roller.
